VDOE Reframing Discipline: A Practitioners’ Conference - Roanoke

Offered in conjunction with Virginia’s Student Support and Conduct Committee (VSSCC), this free one day conference provides an opportunity for school leaders and student support personnel to learn from other practitioners’ efforts to reduce suspensions/expulsions and improve school climate. The conference will feature a keynote presentation from Dr. Ramiro Rubalcaba who will share his experience in changing school climate and drastically reducing suspensions at Garfield High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District. In breakout sessions, members of the VSSCC will share practices that have been implemented with positive results in Virginia schools. The VSSCC is a collaborative group of hearing officers from across the Commonwealth who have worked within their divisions to address approaches for reducing discipline incidents, reducing disparity in suspensions and expulsions, and improving student support services

The conference will be held in two locations.

Roanoke - March 28, 2017, Holiday Inn Tanglewood

Williamsburg - March 30, 2017, Doubletree by Hilton

Registration begins at 7:30a.m. The general session begins at 8:30 a.m. and the conference ends at 4 p.m. Lunch will be provided. Please register for either event by March 21, 2017.

Keynote Address: Dr. Ramiro Rubalcaba

Creating Positive, Safe, and Effective Learning Environments: PBIS

This keynote is designed to support school, district, division, community, and state teams in developing or improving their school climate plans in order to prepare every student to be college and career ready. The presenter, Dr. Ramiro Rubalcaba, will share how theory was put to practice by creating a team that collaboratively focused on positively supporting every student to succeed academically and socially instead of being reactive and punitive. Participants will be provided research-based “best practices” and resources, engage in case scenarios, and reflect on and enhance existing plans or practices in order to promote positive behavioral and academic outcomes for all students.

1. Interventions, Supports, and Resource Mapping for Building a Tiered System of Support
2. Realigning School-wide Expectations
3. Using our Community Partners to Build a System of Support for Struggling Students
4. Revising the Code of Student Conduct To Create a Positive and Welcoming School Environment

6. Ensuring Effective Tier One Implementation and Practices
7. The Role of the Hearing Officer and Student and Parent Rights in the Discipline Process
8. Community and Law Enforcement Partnerships: Strategies for Developing a Partnership to Improve School Climate and Safety Outcomes
9. Restorative Justice in Fairfax County Public Schools

Focus Group Session:

All participants will be asked to join a focus group session to gather input for suggesting revisions to the Virginia School Board Student Code of Conduct Policy Guidelines and the Discipline, Crime, and Violence (DCV) data reporting system.
